As Avery Poulton heads into her senior year at Woods Cross High School, her impact on the court is already undeniable. A standout multi-sport athlete, Avery has been a force for both the varsity volleyball and basketball teams since her underclassman years. Now, with a college commitment to the University of Kansas to continue her volleyball career, she's ready to close out her high school chapter in powerful fashion.
Last season, as a junior, Avery stepped into a key leadership role as a captain for the volleyball team. Known for her relentless work ethic and competitive drive, she quickly became the glue that held the team together. Her leadership style balances intensity with humility, a rare combination that’s earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike.
“She’s a really hard worker… pushing the team to be better,” said Head Coach Hilton. “As a coach, that’s exactly what you want from a star player, someone who shows up when it’s game time but also lifts everyone else around her.”
Averys mindset didn’t just show up overnight, she has spent years refining her skills and building a reputation as a player who leads by example. Whether it’s through an extra set of reps after practice, encouraging a teammate, or delivering a clutch performance when the team needs it most, she embodies the kind of dedication that fuels championship-level programs.
Her commitment to KU marks a significant milestone in her athletic journey. The Jayhawks are gaining more than just a talented player; they’re gaining a natural leader and relentless competitor who’s only just begun to tap into her potential.

When asked what ultimately led her to choose Kansas, Avery shared, “I have a great relationship with Coach Ulmer and the entire staff at KU. I felt like they could help me become the best version of myself on and off the court. KU also has a great history of support for women’s sports and the volleyball team is no exception. They have great facilities and amazing support from the fans, and I really love the culture that they’re building at KU.”
As she enters her final season at Woods Cross, Avery’s focus remains steady. “I’m very grateful for my opportunity to play after high school, it’s a dream come true,” she said. “But my perspective hasn’t changed much. My focus is on enjoying the next couple of months with my teammates and having the best year we can.”
Leadership will once again be central to Avery’s role this season, particularly in mentoring the younger players. Drawing from her own experience, she shared, “I had really good examples of strong leaders when I was an underclassman. My hope is to continue that example and support the younger players as much as I can and help them grow to be their best on and off the court. The great thing about being on a team is that as you become close with the girls, you have the ability to influence each other and help one another grow.”

Averys influence is also rooted in her personal mindset. She shared that she lives by a quote from Kobe Bryant that speaks volumes about her approach:
“Those times when you get up early and you work hard, those times when you stay up late and you work hard, those times when you don’t feel like working, you’re too tired, you don’t want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. That is actually the dream. It’s not the destination, it's the journey.” - Kobe Bryant
“Focusing on the process helps me stay positive and committed when I am faced with challenges in sports or life,” she said. “It helps me keep a greater perspective and trust in God, knowing that if I stay consistent, my path will be what it’s supposed to.”
For Avery Poulton, senior year isn’t just a farewell tour, it’s a culmination of years of hard work, growth, and resilience. While her stats and accolades will speak for themselves, it’s the legacy of leadership, character, and heart that she’ll leave behind at Woods Cross.
